What is that Noise My Car is Making?
Those strange knocking, whizzing and rattling sounds coming from your car aren't going to fix themselves, as much as you wish they would. It is important to pay attention to what your vehicle is trying to tell you so that you don't end up stuck on the side of the highway, broken down because of an issue that could have easily been prevented with a quick trip to the auto shop. If you hear any weird noises do not delay making that phone call to the mechanic to schedule a diagnosis. Here are three common reasons for an excessively loud car.
Whining Torque Converter
Your transmission has many moving parts and operation with low transmission fluid can cause major problems. Cars with automatic transmissions have torque converters and the most common issue with them is damaged or worn needle bearings. If these needle bearings need to be serviced you will hear a loud whizzing or grinding noise while your car is in gear, but not in neutral.
One of the more common reasons for an excessively loud vehicle is an exhaust leak. The escaping fumes will create a loud rumbling noise. A properly working exhaust system takes the toxic fumes out of the engine, past the passenger cabin, through a catalytic converter that alters the fumes into less hazardous exhaust and lets it out the tailpipe. Exhaust leaks are especially dangerous because the fumes could make their way into the passenger cabin, which could be deadly.
Failed Engine Bearings
The moving parts inside of the engine rest on engine bearings that require proper lubrication in order to do their job right. The can become worn out due to high miles or operating a vehicle with low oil levels, If this wear happens they will start to create a high volume knocking noise, that rises and falls with the engine RPMs. They will need to be serviced right away to avoid complete engine failure.
